Mood in Poetry

Section 2 Assignment |
Sensory language or imagery, which is sometimes called word pictures, can create mood. Mood is the feeling or emotion a piece stimulates in the reader. Hints about mood are evident in the descriptions of the setting or situation within the poem.

If you create an image of a child walking alone through a graveyard, the mood may be dark and ominous. The paved graves, brave and gray
Ghosts glanced at me and waved
I stood frozen in the night
There was only one street light
The ghosts raved; they were a cold urgent wave
Craving to be saved

You might create a word picture of the summer sun:
Blissfully the sun warms my face
Magical golden rays all over the place
Finally, we are unburdened and free.
Words such as blissfully, warm, magical, golden rays, unburdened and free, indicate a positive and happy mood.
