A Canadian tradition worth mentioning is the Potluck.  Two possible sources for the tradition are the Irish “luck-of-the-pot” or the West Coast Native “potlach” celebration. Today, potlucks refer to a celebration where food dishes are numerous, large, and unplanned.  Everyone contributes a treasured dish whether it is a family salad, traditional staple, or comfort food. Usually, there are left overs for people to take home. Potlucks are a way of breaking down social barriers and building relationships as you share food with your family, friends, and neighbours. Trust is best built face to face. This is why the potluck is an iconic celebration where everyone is included. Memories are made from hanging around the table and asking ‘whose dish will disappear first?’ Potlucks can inspire fierce competition over whose dish is most popular. In all, potlucks are a risk because you never know what you are going to get. This teaches us to accept circumstances as they happen. For these reasons, potlucks are a timeless Canadian tradition.
