Canadian Identity


What shapes our Canadian identity?


In Chapter 6, you studied many events with various cultures of people trying to live together in one country.

Your task is to show one group’s contribution to Canada’s emerging identity.

Review the events you read about in Chapter 6 and the contributions of the various groups to Canada’s identity.

  1. Choose one of the following events:
      • War in the Thirteen Colonies (American War of Independence)
      • Loyalists come to Quebec
      • War of 1812
      • Great Migration
      • Rebellions in Upper Canada and Lower Canada

  2. Identify the group that was most involved in shaping Canada’s complex identity during your chosen event. 
      • British
      • Canadien (Francophone)
      • First Nations

  3. For the event you have chosen, do both of the following:

    • describe the event

    • explain how the actions of your chosen group contributed to the shaping of the Canadian identity

  4. Present your information in one or two well-written paragraphs.


Be sure you meet the following criteria:

  • You have identified clearly and described the event you have chosen. 

  • You have explained how the actions of your chosen group contributed to the shaping of Canada’s identity for your chosen event.

  • You have presented your information in one or two well-written paragraphs.
