  Chapter 12 Assessment

Elements of Settlement

In Chapter 12, you learned about the Numbered Treaties established in the West, the arrival of Eastern European and Chinese immigrants to the West, and the move from majority to minority for Francophones in the West.


  1. Your task for this assessment is to identify two distinct historical or cultural elements of Aboriginal, Eastern European, Chinese, and Francophone immigration or settlement in Western Canada.

  2. Consider the following questions to help you in this task.
      • Why did they want to live in Western Canada?
      • What was unique about their culture?
      • Were there any government decisions that affected the group choosing to live in Western Canada?

  3. Include a summary in which you identify which group you believe had the most significant influence on the development of the Canadian West. Explain reasons to support your choice.

  4. Present your information in a graphic organizer.
      • You may use the chart provided in the link, or you may present your information in one of the following formats.

          • template or organizer of your own design
          • PowerPoint presentation (Text is required.)

  5. If you choose to use the chart provided, download the document, Elements of Settlement

    Please save your work to a file on your desktop so you will have a copy to refer back to.

Be sure you have included all the following in your final product:

  • identification of two historical or cultural elements of immigration or settlement for each group

  • identification of which group you believe is most significant to the development of the Canadian West

  • explanation of reasons to support your choice
