Assignment

"We believe we are the consumers, but we are the consumed."

~ Bryant McGill, Voice of Reason

Visuals grab your attention and persuade you to act.

How do advertisers make this happen? What techniques do they use?

Advertisements are an ancient art form.

For example, Babylonians and Egyptians advertised the power and importance of a person, by the size of the statue.

Today, media advertisements surround you in video games, newspapers, magazines, DVD packaging, movies, commercials, social media, mobile device apps, bus stops, clothing, and billboards.

Targeting an Audience

Sometimes two companies cross-promote or promote each others’ products.

Marketers associate their products with the latest video game or movie. When you see a video character using branded merchandise, or when a product appears in a character’s hands during a movie, remember the product was placed there deliberately— and for a price.

  1. In addition, companies spend time talking and listening to various target audiences.  By knowing more about a target audience and making better connections with that group, companies can sell more products.

  1. The target group also determines where the advertisement will be promoted such as
      • digital media (Facebook, apps, video games, podcasts, and blogs)

                      or

      • traditional media (books, magazines, newspapers, television, radio, billboards)
  • For example, an ad targeted at school children, would not be placed on a website for adults.

The placement of an advertisement is determined by the size of the audience.
  1. To determine where to place an advertisement, consider not only audience, but also purpose:

      • advocacy (sponsorship)
      • public relations (public image)
      • communication
      • entertainment
      • other
The purpose of an advertisement is to inform people about a product and persuade them to buy it.
