Cultural Barriers and Making Inferences


People unfamiliar with the necessary background information, may receive a different message than was intended.

  • A student in Canada may interpret the setting in Figure 1 as a playground.
  • A student in an active war country may interpret it as a prison.


Not everybody draws the same conclusions from a situation.

Be sure to check other people's interpretations, and be explicit about your own.

The following are some examples of ideas that could be misinterpreted by non-English speaking people: 


General Motor's marketing of the Nova car did not go very well in Central and South America. No Va in Spanish means: "It doesn't go."


    Pepsi's "Come alive with the Pepsi Generation" translates into "Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the grave," in Chinese.
