Review the reading strategies you learned in previous units before reading your novel.

Take a look at the Reading Strategies poster on the 4Learning website. Consider when each strategy might be helpful.

Consider the following features before reading your novel:
  • Front Cover: title and images to represent the story
  • Acknowledgements: contributions of others
  • Dedication: author's dedication of the book
  • Prologue: introductory chapter
  • Special Features: unique and defining characteristics

Vocabulary

What makes learning new words worthwhile?

  • discovering the meaning of an unfamiliar word
  • learning that context affects the meaning of a word
  • using a new word confidently in writing or speaking
