Midterm Exam (Units 1 through 4) Introduction


IMPORTANT! You must complete the Units 1-4 work (readings and assigned textbook pages, finish and submit assignments, discussions and review quizzes) FIRST before you attempt this exam.

You may choose to write your Midterm Exam in either the print or on line version (they are the same exam). Indicate which format of the exam that you prefer to your teacher.

  • You may write the Midterm exam only after you have completed all the course work in Units 1-4. All assignments, discussions and unit review quizzes must be completed and graded before the exam is released.

  • If you score less than 40% on your Midterm exam, you can choose to write the Midterm Exam Appeal or take that mark as your mark for Units 1-4.

  • The Midterm exam is worth 20% of the total course mark.
  • The Midterm exam may be online or print.
  • The Midterm exam must be completed before moving to Unit 5.
  • Exams must be written under the supervision of an approved supervisor. Contact your teacher.

Part A: Multiple-Choice Questions

  • 25 multiple-choice questions worth 50% of the exam.

  • Computer marked.

Part B: Written Response

  • Three written-response assignments (a source based question, a citizens question, and a terminology written response) worth 50% of the exam

  • Written responses are expected to be multi-paragraph responses.

  • Teacher marked using rubrics.


Assignment I Identifying Concepts 
Value: 10% of exam mark

Students will respond to an assigned task in multiple paragraph response by demonstrating understanding of Social Studies

Students will be marked on

  • Explanations and Support

  • Communication

Assignment II Analyzing Sources  
Value: 20% of exam mark

Students will interpret each of three sources presented and use details from these sources and their understanding of Social Studies to defend a position. Using multiple paragraph response format.

Students will be marked on

  • Interpretations of Sources

  • Defense of Position

  • Communication

Assignment III Perspectives on Issues
Value: 20% of exam mark

Students will explore an issue and analyze two to four points of view on the issue that are presented. Students will construct multi paragraph responses that explain and support their points of view on the issue.

Students will be marked on

  • Exploration and Analysis

  • Defense of Position

  • Communication


Appeal Exam

If you wish to improve your mark on the Midterm Exam, an appeal exam is available. The appeal exam has the same format of 25 multiple choice questions and three written response questions. However, the questions will be different. The higher of the two marks (on the Midterm Exam or Midterm Exam Appeal) will be used.

Help Writing Multiple Choice and Written Response Questions

This Social 30-2 course has been developed to help you complete the course successfully as well as complete the Diploma Exam successfully.

  • Multiple-choice items in the self-quizzes, unit reviews, and the Midterm Exam have been constructed to give you exposure to questions similar to those in the Diploma Exam.

  • Written assignments in the units and in the Midterm Exam have also been designed to prepare you for the written portion of the Diploma Exam. There is a source based question, a citizens, and a terminology pick with an issue question.
