What is a rubric?

  • A rubric is a scoring guide used in the evaluation of a student assignment.

  • The scoring guide has a fixed mark scale with the criteria for each mark.

Why are rubrics used?

  • A rubric describes the quality and understanding that you demonstrate in your assignment regarding the concepts taught in a course.

  • You may use a rubric before attempting an assignment to understand what is expected.

  • You may use a rubric during an assignment to ensure he or she is on track.

  • The teacher uses a rubric to mark your completed assignment.

  • Both you and the teacher may use a rubric to discuss how and why you received a particular mark on an assignment.
