Fukazawa Yukichi was a Japanese author who had a great influence on the modernization of Japan. He is credited with inventing the term “civilization and enlightenment”, which became the motto of the westernization movement.
Yukichi believed in more than the adoption of western dress and industry. He spoke about social justice and government. One of his famous sayings is, “It is said that heaven does not create one man above or below another man. Any existing distinction between the wise and the stupid, between the rich and the poor, comes down to a matter of education.”
