How Does Light Interact With Other Materials?
Targets
At the end of this unit, you should be able to answer the following questions:
2. How does light interact with other materials?
2.1 How can we use light to classify objects as transparent, translucent, or opaque?
2.2 How do objects create shadow?

Because you encounter light everyday, you already have a good idea of how light interacts with other materials. You see it happen around you everyday.
Our eyes see an object because light hits the object and bounces back to our eyes. Depending on the material that light hits, the light might pass through it, bounce back, or a little bit of both. How do we know which of these things will occur?

Career Connection
Photographers are very aware of how light behaves to make sure they get
the type of picture they want. They use various lenses and filters
depending on how much light they want to pass through the camera. This
short video describes some of
the filters that photographers use to get the perfect
shot.
