Discover - Comparing Product Packaging

When products are made, they are stored in certain kinds of packages. Product packaging needs to keep the product safe, clean, and fresh until someone buys it and opens it. People who design packaging for products also think
about the cost to make the package, what kinds of materials to use, and how much of each material to use to make the package. Some people also want to be sure that product packaging is environmentally friendly. A lot of thought
goes into how a product will be packaged. For example, look at the pictures of various milk containers. Milk used to be shipped from farms in big metal cans. Now, tanker trucks haul the milk. The big metal can, would not
be easy to carry home from the grocery store, so glass bottles were used.

For the consumer, milk is now packaged in jugs, cartons, or plastic bags for sale in stores. This makes it easier to buy milk, store it in your fridge, and dispose of the container when it is empty.
