1. What is the difference between a wheel and a roller?
  • Wheels are attached to what they are moving- like on a car, the wheels move with the car.
  • Rollers stay in one place, and the object they are moving moves over top of them.  For example, on a treadmill the belt causes a constant moving loop, while the rollers spin in place.
2. A person who fishes a lot has just bought a boat. The boat is big and heavy, and the person is worried about sliding the boat onto the boat trailer. Would you recommend using wheels or rollers to solve this problem? Explain your answer.
  • Rollers should be used on a boat trailer.
  • A roller stays attached to the trailer, and helps the boat to move smoothly into position.
3. When you purchase groceries at a store checkout, usually a conveyor belt near the cash register carries your purchases to the cashier. Why do you think stores use conveyor belts at their checkouts?
  • the conveyor belt at the checkout helps to move groceries up to the cashier, as you move up in the line.  This way you don't need to pick up your groceries and replace them, every time the person in front of your pays.
