1. What is the difference between a pulley and a gear?
  • A gear is a wheel and axle with teeth, usually combined with other gears to form a gear train.  A gear train can offer a force or a speed advantage, depending on how it is set up.
  • A pulley is a wheel and axle with a rope around the wheel.  Pulley are used for a force advantage.  The re-direct the effort force, so that we can use our body weight to move objects.

2. Explain how the gears are arranged in an eggbeater to increase the speed of motion.
  • The large gear that has the crank has many more teeth than the smaller gears that run the beaters.  For one rotation of the handle gear the beater gears must rotate several more times, which means that the beaters spin faster than the handle.

3. You are designing a machine and need to change spinning motion into straight-line motion.  What simple machine options do you have that would do this?
  • A rack and pinion takes a spinning motion and turns it into a straight- line motion.  This happens in a car steering wheel.
