What is the Great Bear Rainforest?
What is a rainforest?
Rainforests are known for having a lot of rainfall or water. Water allows mosses and ferns to grow. Temperate rainforests, such as British Columbia's Big Bear Rainforest, contains many diverse plants and animals. To learn more facts about temperate rainforests, click here.
In 2016, the British Columbia government promised to protect protect 85% of the large cedar and sitka trees (old-growth forests) from clear cutting.
The area is currently in the news because of the proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline which would bring oil tanker ships into the area.
Canadians want to sell oil to countries, other than the United States which buys 99% of our oil. Canadians also have concerns about how and where the pipeline will be built.
