Key Ideas

  • The imperial system is still commonly used in Canada. Pounds, feet and miles are used everyday, especially by older Canadians who grew up using the imperial system.
  • Imperial units are not related to one another by multiples of 10.
  • Some imperial measurements have multiple units (example: birth weight is given in pounds and ounces), and there are two strategies that can be used for conversions involving those types of measurements.
  • Conversion ratios and proportions are used to convert from one Imperial unit to another.
