Lesson 2: Transversals - Adjacent Angles

   Constructing Knowledge

Adjacent angles are angles that are beside each other along either parallel line or beside each other along the transversal. These angles form a straight angle, 180°.

Adjacent angles can be beside each other on either side of the transversal (left or right) or on either side of either parallel line (up or down).

The sets of adjacent angles in this diagram are:

  • ∠A and ∠C
  • ∠D and ∠B
  • ∠E and ∠G
  • ∠H and ∠F
  • ∠A and ∠D
  • ∠C and ∠B
  • ∠E and ∠H
  • ∠G and ∠F

   Multimedia

A video describing adjacent angles is provided.

EXAMPLE

Name the adjacent angles in the aerial photograph of the group of airport runways shown.

Solution

The sets of adjacent angles are:

  • ∠1 and ∠2
  • ∠3 and ∠4
  • ∠5 and ∠7
  • ∠6 and ∠8
  • ∠1 and ∠3
  • ∠2 and ∠4
  • ∠5 and ∠6
  • ∠7 and ∠8

Now, it is your turn! Complete the questions in your Chapter 6, Lesson 2 Practice Makes Perfect that refer to Adjacent Angles.
