Lesson 2: Transversals - Vertically Opposite Angles

Vertically opposite angles are equal in measure. Vertical means they are on either side of a single line and opposite means they are on opposite sides of the transversal.



The sets of vertically opposite angles are:

For the top half of the diagram:

  • ∠A and ∠B
  • ∠C and ∠D

For the bottom half of the diagram:

  • ∠E and ∠F
  • ∠G and ∠H

EXAMPLE

Name the vertically opposite angles in the aerial photograph of the group of airport runways shown.

Solution


The sets of vertically opposite angles are:

  • ∠1 and ∠4
  • ∠2 and ∠3
  • ∠6 and ∠7
  • ∠5 and ∠8
