D. Connection to Linear Functions

Warm Up

Review of Linear Functions

In Math 10C, you investigated linear functions, whose graphs produce straight lines. Two important concepts to review with linear functions are slope and \(y\)-intercept. In Math 10C, you learned that slope (\(m\)) is the ratio of vertical change (rise) to horizontal change (run). As a formula,

\[m = \frac{{{\rm{rise}}}}{{{\rm{run}}}} = \frac{{y_2 - y_1 }}{{x_2 - x_1 }} \]

The \(y\)-intercept is the \(y\)-coordinate where the graph crosses the \(y\)-axis, or the value of \(y\) when \(x\) = 0.
