Elements of Poetry

Poetry relies on a number of aspects that contribute to the whole understanding of the poem. Diction is often one aspect of poetry that brings about clearer understanding. What is diction? Diction is the choice of words and phrases that we use to express ourselves. In literature, diction is the term that is used to describe the level of language used, whether it be slang, colloquial, or formal language.

Rhythm is often used in poetry to create a flow of stressed and unstressed syllables that create a pattern of sound referred to as metres. Rhythm sets the beat and tempo of a poem.

Repetition is not used because the poet couldn't think of any other words to use. Repetition is done for a purpose, often to change the rhythm as well as to create a different tone in the poem. Repetition is often used to develop some different nuances of the meaning of the term. When words, phrases, or sentences are repeated in poetry, it often causes the reader to reflect and think about the reasons why the speaker might repeat that particular word, phrase, or sentence.

The Poetry tutorial will provide you with information regarding many aspects of poetry, such as enjambment/line breaks, free verse, speaker, stanza, and voice. You will find many ideas, techniques, and opportunities to look for these elements that communicate as you read poetry and as you reflect on the tutorial.

One element of poetry is that language is concentrated for maximum effect. Poets often strive to say more with fewer words. This concentrated language is often referred to as figurative language, as this compressed language allows the speaker to say more than what he or she appears to be saying.

You will encounter terms that you should understand. Similes and metaphors are common ways in which we draw comparisons. Enjambment, stanzas, and word choice are going to be important for us to understand, too, as we seek to glean the message of the poem.
