Unit 1

What Does it Mean to Show Respect?

Lesson 1, pp. 4-7 Literacy in Action 5A

United Nations building in Geneva, Switzerland.  The flags in the picture are for each country that is part of the United Nations.

Read the quotation on the bottom of p. 4 in the textbook.  A quotation is something written or spoken by an individual.

U Thant was a Burmese (Myanmar) prime minister who was also secretary general of the United Nations (1961-1971) during the Cuban missile crisis.

U Thant spoke about peace from Buddhist beliefs but acted with military force in Africa.

In another sad truth, modern Myanmar, is one of the poorest socialist countries in the world. "U Thant’s vision of [respect] has not been realized in his own country." Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon,June 3, 2009. To learn more about Myanmar, click here.

Think about what this quotation is saying about how governments should work to respect citizens such as you.
