Keep in mind how voice plays an important role in poetry as you go on to read There Is No They, Only Us.

If you were to listen to a professional speaker read this poem, you would notice that the reader uses two different tones of voice for each half of the poem.

  • Her voice for the first half of the poem ("They") sounds upset, angry, and sad.
  • Her voice for the second half of the poem ("Us") sounds happy and hopeful.

After you read the poem, think about what the title of the poem means.

Think about the title There Is No They, Only Us. What do you think it means? Who do you think the author refers to when she says "they" and "us"? Write down your thoughts.
