Unit 2
How Do Advertisements Influence People?
Lesson 5
Reader's Notebook
Pages 92 and 95 of Literacy in Action 5A.
In the past, advertising was made up of 30-second television ads. Now with cell phones and the Internet, advertising has changed. For example, advertising is blended with games and activities on the Internet. It may be difficult to tell the difference between a dream and reality.
It may seem like there are lots of advertisers and choices, but media is somewhat controlled in Canada. Bell, Telus, and Rogers control over 80 percent of the cell phone and digital Internet market; 70 percent of the daily and community Canadian newspapers are owned by seven companies; and 10 companies control over 80 percent of radio and television stations (CMCRP N.d.; Newspapers Canada, 2013). These companies have a lot of influence over other parts of Canadian entertainment. For example, Rogers owns the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team.
On the other hand there are other countries that have even more media control. These countrie(s) may block Youtube, Twitter, Facebook. This is because these countrie(s) know that media has power to teach us how to behave, and how we should think or react to events.

Good readers set a purpose for their reading.
They get the information they need quickly. Often, they will scan a selection (speed read) to locate a specific fact or piece of information in a text. For example, if you are looking through a text for an answer to a question, you are scanning it. People often skim (glance over) the text to locate key ideas. They read the first few paragraphs, or the first sentence of each paragraph. Or, they skim to examine the key features such as headings, text boxes, and photos.
