Unit 2

How Do Advertisements Influence People?

Lesson 8

Activity

Design an Advertisement

Your task will be to design your own ad.

For your final assessment you are going to choose a product and create an advertisement for it. You will create a script for an oral presentation as well. This will allow you to demonstrate your use of precise and descriptive language.

In Section 2, you will answer the three remaining essential questions for the Unit.

Game

  • At this point in the unit, you are encouraged to explore Level 4 of Admongo
  • Admongo – advertising literacy training for tweens
  • Level 4: The Adgitator
    • Area 1 – choose a product, name, logo, copy and graphics for a print ad
    • Area 2 - how a print ad might turn into a billboard, radio or online ad

Checklist

Use the Ad Checklist to help you identify the advertising techniques to use in your ad.

Document: 2-4 Ad

  1. Download the document, 2-4 Ad.
  2. IMPORTANT NOTE: When the download screen opens:
      • Click the "Open with" button.
      • Select "Adobe Reader".
      • Click "OK".
      • You will then be able to view the document, 2-4 Ad.

Your first step is to decide what product you would like to create an ad for and who the target audience will be.

  • Choose ONE of the following five products and decide for yourself what it looks like.
    • a running shoe that ties itself
    • an un-spillable glass
    • jeans that don't get dirty
    • a book that reads itself to its reader
    • a ball with a beacon in it so it can't be lost

  • Ask yourself which one do I like the best? Which one do I know the most about?

Game

  • At this point in the unit, you are encouraged to explore Level 4 of Admongo. There are four levels that you will investigate at different points in the unit.
  • Admongo – advertising literacy training for tweens
  • Level 4: The Adgitator
    • Area 1 – choose a product, name, logo, copy and graphics for a print ad
    • Area 2 - how a print ad might turn into a billboard, radio or online ad

Once you have chosen your product, make sure you design your ad with a target audience in mind.

  • For example you probably would not try to target senior citizens to buy rollerblades.

On pages 102 and 103 of Literacy in Action 5A, there are five headings that will lead you through the process of designing an ad.

  • The first section of the outline Plan an Advertisement reminds you of the product and audience, the purpose and message, and the different forms that ads may take.

Use the document Planning an Advertisement in your planning process.

One additional resource that may give you some ideas is the producer portion of the Reference Poster: Think Media!

  1.  Click here and watch the following two videos:
    • Media Minute Lesson 2: Media are Constructions

    • Media Minute Lesson 3: Audiences Negotiate Meaning

  1. As you work on your advertisement, remember to take the time to revise. Ask yourself questions such as:
      • Is my message clear?
      • Do the words I use encourage my audience to get involved?
      • Do my words and images have impact?
      • Do they work together to reinforce the message?
      • How can I make my work better?

    1. Ask two or three trusted friends or adults to look at your ad. What suggestions do they have?
    2. Revise:
        • Read the template page rubric
        • Review the feedback you received. Look carefully at your work. Decide what to change, add, remove or rearrange.
        • Rewrite as necessary.

    3. Complete the final copy.
    4. When you are satisfied with your ad, submit it to Moodle.

    Script

Prepare a script to go along with the advertisement you created.

You must provide the words in written form.  Also, you may choose to
    • videotape yourself presenting your ad
    • use a voice program such as Vocaroo to record your presentation
    • leave a voicemail for your teacher

    Save

How to save a file for submission:

    1. Save your work to your computer.
    2. Select your Documents folder as the location to Save In.
    3. Name the file. You will always name your files in a similar way.
        • Use the first letter of your first name, followed by your last name, then an underscore (_), then the name of the file.
        • In this case, the file name is 2-4-ad. For example, if my name is John Smith, I would name my file jsmithla5_2-4-ad.

    4. Click Save. Your chart is in your Documents folder.

    Submit your file to Moodle:

    1. Submit your completed 2-4-ad.
    2. Click on the Add Submission button to upload your document.
