Read with Purpose, page 126 of Literacy in Action 5A.

Click each coloured row for information about the activity.

Reading scientific material is different from reading stories.

Science writers often use explanations to explain how something works (a microwave oven), to describe what something is like (the weather), or to provide information on a topic (recycling). The writing shows real-life situations, supplies true facts, and shares important scientific information.

  1. Open Literacy In Action 5A to page 126 and read the section in green under the heading Reading in Science.
      • Answer Questions 1 and 2 in the During Reading section of the Reader's Notebook: Read With a Purpose.

  2. Scientific sources of information about the human body can be found in magazines, brochures in a doctors office, posters, books, radio and TV talk shows, movies, and newspapers.
      • Read the rest of page 126 in Literacy in Action 5A.
      • Complete the Healthy Bodies information Chart that is on the Reader's Notebook: Read With a Purpose (like the one shown on page 126). Add at least three more topics and three more sources of information. Two examples have been provided.
