Nancy is back to explain that a text pattern that is often used in scientific explanations is called the Cause and Effect Relationship.

Let's explore the Body Organs: Your Brain poster using a Cause and Effect Graphic Organizer.

  • When writers are explaining something, they often use words and phrases to show how one thing can affect another.
    • For example, under How Does it Work? it states that the brain sends messages and that these messages "tell your heart to beat and your lungs to breathe." This is a Cause and Effect Relationship.
    • The Cause is the brain sends messages.
    • The Effect is the heart will beat and the lungs will breathe.

  • I would fill in the box called Effects with the words "A Healthy Brain".

  • Next, I take another look at the web pages, by clicking here and here. Next read them over this time identifying key ideas, details and causes that would have an effect on a healthy brain.
