This next lesson continues with your final project for this unit: an explanation of a body system. You have until the end of this unit to work through all the activities in this lesson. Your final project (Assignment 3-4 Report) will be handed into the teacher in the End of Unit lesson.  You can download the assignment file below.

In the lesson Read like a Writer, you completed a Planning an Explanation worksheet to organize information that you researched about a body organ or system.


  1. Take another look at your Planning an Explanation document.
  2. Read the information called Research Tips on page 152 of Literacy in Action 5A. Did you do all of these things when you first started your research?
  3. Read the sections called Write an Article at the top of page 153 of Literacy in Action 5A. These questions will help you to focus your topic to make sure it is the best that it can be. This information is also a checklist that you can use to make sure you have completed all parts of the writing assignment.
  4. Some important features of articles that are explanations is that they include:
      • important ideas and specific details
      • cause and effect relationships
      • a combination of images and information
      • images such as maps, graphs, diagrams and photos
