Unit 3

How Does the Human Body Work?

Lesson 11

Reader's Notebook

Hidden Worlds Magnified

Pages 157 to 160 of Literacy in Action 5A.

You know that in order to have a healthy body, your organs and body systems must remain healthy. Different body organs work together (like the heart and lungs) to create body systems.

The next selection shows magnified images of parts of a body. The close-up images you will be viewing are of "hidden worlds" in the human body.

Reader's Notebook

In the Before Reading section of the Reader's Notebook: Hidden Worlds Magnified, make a close up sketch of a body part.

Focus on a small area of the body, like a fingernail, a mole or a birthmark, pretending that you are looking through a magnifying glass. Use a magnifying glass if you have one.
Adjectives

The photographs can be described using strong, vivid adjectives. Adjectives are words that describe nouns.

Example: It reminds me of green, underwater coral. The words in italics are adjectives that describe the word coral.
