After you have read the poem for the first time, read it again. Pay attention to what type of language the poet has used to create images. Notice that there are many phrases that use the word like to compare two things. A comparison that uses the words like or as is called a simile. A simile is a figure of speech that helps to create strong pictures in your mind.
As you are reading the poem, watch for similes. Write two examples of similes from the poem in the During Reading section on the Reader’s Notebook: Hoops.
