Recall the figures of speech you learned in this Unit. A simile, for example, compares one thing to something else using the words like or as. A metaphor compares one thing to another not using the words
like or as.
Figures of Speech help to develop setting. For example, in Bridge to Terabithia, the author's similes bring the southern setting and rural culture of the story to life.
- Jess doesn't put on a shirt to run because "he would be hot as popping grease even if the morning air was chill." (page 1)
- He worries about making his mother "mad as flies in a fruit jar." (page 1)
