What Does It Mean to Be Canadian?

Reading in Social Studies: Make Meaning

Think About It

  • Where is one place that you could find information about Canada?

In this lesson, you are going to read a report about Canada's national anthem.

A report is a written text about a person, place, or thing. It has been researched to make sure everything in the report is true and correct. A report does not tell the writer's opinions - just the facts about what is being researched.

On page 129 of Literacy in Action 5A, there is a list of three strategies to use when reading reports:

  • Use what you know to make new information easier to understand, remember, and talk about.
  • Decide what's important, and separate the important points from the extra information.
  • Summarize the information and put it in your own words.

Click each coloured row for information about the activity.

Look at the report Symbols of Canada: Our National Anthem.
