This report is about a lady named Esther Bryan who created an amazing quilt.
She used the quilt blocks, design, and thread to symbolize the unity of all Canadians, regardless of culture or where they came from. This report will tell you the story about how Esther came up with her amazing idea.

Before you begin reading the report on pages 162 to 165 in Literacy in Action 5B, think about what you already know about quilts.
Perhaps you have a family member who makes quilts, or maybe you've just seen them in stores. Go to the Reader’s Notebook: Quilt of Belonging page and answer the Before Reading question.

Now, go to page 162 in your Literacy in Action 5 book. Preview the title, headings, captions, and pictures. Look closely at the different squares on the quilt on page 162 and throughout the rest of the report.

When you have previewed the report, think of one idea for the question, How can a quilt be a symbol of belonging?
After you have finished reading, go to the Reader’s Notebook: Quilt of Belonging page and answer the After Reading question.
