Unit 7

What is Friendship?

Activity

Bridge to Terabithia: Poem

Your next activity is to write a poem based on the novel.

Read over all the words you have listed in your Bridge to Terabithia Vocabulary. Choose a selection of words and phrases that you'd like to use in your poem (ex: vile, solemn, parapets) and think about how these might fit together to create a short poem. Skim through the novel to locate any other words and phrases that caught your eye when you were reading this novel.

Review the list of similes you collected while you were reading Bridge to Terabithia. Are there any similes you would like to include in your poem

Using one of the following poetry formats, write a short poem that answers the essential question: What is Friendship? The poem can focus on the answering the question in the poem or by using the poem to provide examples of the friendship between Leslie and Jess.

Websites

  • A Free Verse poem does not have any rhyming or beat pattern.
  • A Cinquain poem has five lines.
  • A Diamante poem is written in the shape of a diamond and has seven lines.
  • A Haiku poem is a three-line poem that has a certain number of syllables in each line.
  • An I Wish Poem is between eight and ten lines long and each line starts with the words I wish.
Poetry is very subjective; therefore, your teacher will only examine three criteria for assessment purposes. Read over the poem questions before you hand in this activity. Make sure you have met all the requirements of the assignment:

  1. Does the poem follow the pattern you chose?
  2. Is the theme of the poem evident?
  3. Have words from the novel been included in the poem?
