Moodle Forum Post—Selfie
Bradley Hayward’s play Selfie centres on the lives of teenagers who are struggling to overcome a variety of personal problems. As we just discussed, for the play to connect with the audience and impact people in an emotional way, the characters must be plausible.
In this assignment, you will evaluate the plausibility of the play and the characters with in it, and then share your thoughts with your classmates in the Moodle Forum.
You have two options for completing this assignment. Choose one.
Option 1
-
Write a one-paragraph response in which you explain whether or not the play as a whole is plausible.
-
State your stance in the first (topic) sentence of your paragraph. Include the name of the play and the playwright.
-
Then choose one character from the play to use as evidence to support your topic sentence. Summarize this character’s journey through the course of the play.
-
Next, give specific examples relating to this character as evidence to support your argument about the play’s plausibility.
Quote direct lines from the play (including the page number), and/or describe specific details or events from the play (including the page number). Evidence could include
- character’s behaviours (actions and reactions)
- dialogue (what the character says or how he or she speaks)
- character’s thoughts and/or feelings
- End your paragraph with a sentence or two explaining the importance of plausibility and tie that in with your argument about the character.
Option 2
-
Write a one-paragraph response in which you discuss a character with whom you felt a personal connection.
-
Your first sentence should mention the play and the playwright as well as the name of the character. This sentence should also reveal how you connected to this character.
- Then give examples (quotations from the play or descriptions of specific events with page numbers) of this character’s experiences as a way to explain why you identified with or connected to this character. Evidence could include
- character’s behaviours (actions and reactions)
- dialogue (what the character says or how he or she speaks)
-
character’s thoughts and/or feelings
-
Give specific details from your own life to illustrate your point.
-
End your paragraph with a sentence or two explaining the importance of plausibility in a text, and support that statement by restating the connection you were able to make with this specific character because he or she was written in a plausible way.
Once you have chosen your option, follow the instructions on the next page, in order, to complete your assignment.
