Unit 1

How Am I Influenced by Images?

Activity

Think Like a Viewer

Page 69 in Literacy in Action entitled Think like a Viewer: suggests you view with a purpose, crack the code of images, and make meaning of the image.  Use the viewing strategy Use what you know, Decide what's important, Evaluate. Finally, you should analyze what you see.

View with a Purpose

This means to think about why you are viewing before you start. Why are you looking at the image? Do you see something right away that attracts you to the image? Are you looking for a new cell phone and noticed it in the ad right away? What is the key detail in the image?

Crack the Code

The purpose of advertising images is to make you want to buy something. When you look at any advertising image, remember that the advertiser wants you to feel good when viewing the ad, and has used specific techniques to manipulate you into wanting the product.
