Unit 1

How Am I Influenced by Images? Assignment 1-2

Activity

Who's the Audience?

Complete Assignment 1-2 by downloading the file below.

Click each coloured row for information about the activity.

Find one advertisement (from a magazine, online, or take a picture of one you have seen).  Complete the Advertisements are Everywhere Chart.

View the three posters β€œWho’s the Audience” on pages 70 to 75 of Literacy in Action 6A. As you view the posters, think about these questions:

  • What is the purpose of the advertisement?
  • Who is the target audience? (Hint: Who is in the picture?)
  • What information do you think the advertiser wants you to consider most important? What is the key detail in the image?
  • What feelings do you think the advertiser wants you to associate with this product? What colour(s) has the advertiser used and how do these make the viewer feel?
  • What techniques has the artist used? For example where are the lines in the image? What is in the foreground or the background?
  • How does the text help communicate the message?
  • Why might the advertiser have chosen to include these particular people, things, and places?
  • Could other people interpret the ad differently?
  • What beliefs or values does the ad reflect?
  • Is any information missing? What possible questions about this product are not answered?

Study the images in each poster and complete a Viewing Advertisements Chart, describing the images and messages in the posters.
