Canadian Steel, Chinese Grit.

In 1871 British Columbia decided to join Canada, but only if the government built a railway to link the province to the rest of the country. Watch the short video called Canadian Steel, Chinese Grit about the lives of Chinese workers who built the first railway in Canada.

For additional information you may read about how the government under John A. MacDonald achieved what seemed impossible and how Canada almost went broke building the railroad at this website.

After the railroad was built, many Chinese workers remained in Canada. Unfortunately, Chinese were not welcomed the same as immigrants from European origins. Canadians wanted to protect their jobs, especially during the Great Depression when there were no jobs. Chinese immigrants would work more cheaply than Canadians. Chinese were taxed when they arrived such as the Chinese Head Tax and Exclusion Act of 1885. To learn more about the Head Tax, visit this website.
