What are stories about?
In this lesson, you will
- extend your knowledge about vocabulary words that are related to stories
- think about the elements of a fictional story or narrative
- learn about the five basic conflicts that occur in fiction
- plan a story using one type of conflict discussed in the unit
Vocabulary Word Wall
Add the following new words from the reading selection How to Tell Tales:
- conflict
- theme
For these words, add an image or picture, a definition, and a sentence using the word correctly.

Review the Words on Your Wall
The words character, plot, setting, conflict, and theme are elements of a fictional story or narrative.
Conflict is added to the list because the problem in a fictional story is usually a conflict of some kind. You will be introduced to remaining words listed later.
