Unit 5

What Can We Learn from Realistic Fiction?

Apostrophes

The Cello of Mr. O could also be written as “Mr O’s Cello”. Apostrophes indicate possession and show contractions. They are not used for plurals.

When in doubt, leave the apostrophe out.

Example:

The wars left the children hungry. The wars is plural and does not need an apostrophe.  - war’s X.

Use apostrophes to show

A.  Possession

Mr O’s cello. Mr. O owns the cello.
Bob’s book. Bob owns the book.

B.  Contractions

Apostrophes show missing letters as in

• Didn’t (missing the o in not)
• I’ll (missing the wi in will)
• I’ve (missing the ha in have)
• You’d (missing the ha in had)
• Who’s (missing the i in is)
• O’clock (missing the of the clock)
• Ma’am (missing the d in madam)
• Jack o’ lantern (missing jack of the lantern)

Whose point of view (perspective) the writer reveals most can help you to identify the ideas about life (or theme) the author is communicating.

In this lesson, you will

  • practise the reading strategies of predicting, inferring, and connecting
  • practise figuring out unusual expressions and analyzing point of view
