Unit 6

What Are Our Connections to the Past?

Lesson 3

Readings on Settlement and Exploration

Why history helps us understand the present.

The "Lost and Found" selection that you read in Lesson 1 happened in the 1600s, yet it is still creating interest today.

History helps us understand cause and effect. It shows what a large effect people in the past had on you today, and shows the effect that you will have on the people of the future.

The facts are the events that happened in the past. The facts are certain.  Not only will you be reading about the facts, you will also read about people's individual opinions, views and experiences of the events that happened. People experience events differently, and so they talk about them differently.  As you read the selections in this lesson, consider what you can learn about an individual's view of history.

Where do people get information about Canadian history? Note some sources listed on page 130.
