Unit 1

What is Courage?

Using Good Word Choices

A Story About a Real-Life Event is Called a Recount.

The authors of each of these poems made good word choices, which helps to create a picture in the readers mind of the actions in the poem.

For example, in 74th Street:

  • …she flops over backwards (better than "she fell over backwards")
  • …and smacks her head (much better than she "hits her head")
  • …and slides about six inches (much better than she "goes about six inches")
and in Courage :

  • Oh, how you ache to (much better than "Oh, how you want to")

Use effective word choices like these when you write your own poem.
