Unit 2

Get The Message!

Assessment (Formative)

A Closer Look at How to Read a Visual

How you look for meaning in a picture is similar to how you look for meaning in a text.

The picture to the right includes three strategies you can use to analyze written or visual messages.

  • Read, or examine, a visual in three stages: use what you know, decide what is important, and determine the author’s message.
  • Download the Reading Strategies document and keep it in your Reader’s Notebook to refer to throughout the unit. Download the Reading Strategies sheet.

Next Steps

You already experimented with a visual message when you searched for meaning in the photograph of the young boy in the first assessment.
You used the five, β€œW's” questions to look for clues and determine meaning.

In the next lesson, you will learn about messages in cartoons and storyboards.
