In Literacy in Action 4A, pages 90 and 91, you will see some examples of how letters and words can send visual messages.



Word Art


  • Notice the creative design of the title, Word Art.
  • The letters above the word “snow” look like snowflakes.
  • The author designed the word “parachute” to look like a parachute.


More About Word Art


  • Individual letters, such as those in the word “tall”, were arranged so that the first letter is much larger, or taller, than others.
  • The word “art” shows the author’s creativity and effective design.


Purpose


  • Authors enhance their purpose to persuade, to inform, or to entertain through use of different visual effects.


Reader's Notebook - Assessment

Write responses to the following questions in your Reader’s Notebook: Word Art.

  1. What other reason or purpose would an author have for creating word art? Where else would you see this kind of art?
  2. Create a visual image with three words that suggest a particular shape, such as the words “snow” or “tall”.
