Unit 2

Get The Message!

Lesson 9

Shape Poetry

How Do Poets Create a Visual Message with Words?

Poems build pictures in a reader's mind through the use of sensory images (sight, smell, hearing, taste, touch).

In concrete poetry, the lines of poetry form different shapes and the words reflect the sense of the poem. Pictures become a part of the poem.

When you studied posters and pictures, you learned that layout is important in guiding the viewer to the author’s message.
In concrete poetry the picture shape and the words are combined to create the message of the poem.

An important part of concrete poems are the words that the author uses.
Onomatopoeia is the use of sound words.
Words like;  crackling, oinked, and whizzed are all examples of onomatopoeia/sound words.
