Unit 3

Survivors!

Assignment

You have two assignments

Saving Habitat Chart

You will start making a Saving Habitat Chart today that you will use throughout the unit.

This chart will connect you and your readings to the Big Question for this unit: How do people show they care about saving habitats?

  1. Download the document Saving Habitat Chart.
  2. IMPORTANT NOTE: When the download screen opens:

The Chart Has Three Columns

  • In the first column, type the title of the reading.
  • In the second column, explain the problem in the habitat described in the reading.
  • In the third column, tell what people can do about the problem to help save the habitat.

Make your first entry in this chart using Hopping to the Rescue.

  • Type Hopping to the Rescue in the first blank.
  • Describe the problem in the habitat in the second blank.
  • Tell what people can do about it in the third blank.

Use the reading strategy to decide what to write in the chart.

  1. Ask questions. What is the most important part here? What’s wrong with the animals? How did this happen? Could it have been prevented? What can people do to fix it now?
  2. Pause and check. Can you explain the problem now? If not, re-read the selection.
  3. Summarize. Can you explain it in one sentence? Write only the most important words. Then, put them together in a sentence.

Save

How to save a file:

  1. Have the file open and select Save As from the File menu.
  2. Name your Saving Habitat Chart file in this format: jsmith_savinghabitatchart and save the file to your Documents folder.
  3. You will be going back to this chart throughout the unit to add more information to it. When you are finished the unit, this chart will serve as one of your assessments.

Important: The Saving Habitat Chart is an ongoing assignment. You will open it and add entries to it as you go through the unit. Every time you will be asked to save it to your Documents folder. You will need to retrieve it from your Documents folder to add entries.
