Unit 3

Survivors!

Assignment

You have two assignments:

  • a new entry in your Saving Habitat Chart
  • a Key Ideas worksheet that lets you practise summarizing

Saving Habitat Chart

Make an entry in your Saving Habitat Chart about Life in a Pond.

Open Your File

Go to your Documents folder and open your Saving Habitat Chart that you have saved there.

Remember to include the name of the story, the problem described in the story, and what people might be able to do about it. Don’t forget to save the chart each time you add to it.

Save

How to save a file:

  1. Have the file open and select Save As from the File menu.
  2. Name your Saving Habitat Chart file in this format: jsmith_savinghabitatchart and save the file to your Documents folder.

Summarizing requires you to decide which ideas and statements in a reading selection are the most important.

To summarize, you must choose the main ideas.

Main ideas are those which sum up what a paragraph or section is about – the general idea that connects all the sentences.
