There are two assignments for this lesson:


  • to plan an explanation
  • to practise ideas and details in writing

Writing an explanation requires planning just like any other kind of writing.
In this assignment, you will learn how to plan an explanation.

Read the introductory paragraph Grey wolf facts for kids.
Notice the headings in the Contents box below the opening paragraph.

You will complete a Planning an Explanation Organizer using the headings; Appearance, Diet and Habitat to show how the the web page organized ideas and details in the explanations about wolves.

How to Fill out the Planning an Explanation Worksheet

On the Planning an Explanation page:


  1. Beside Science Topic/Title type Grey Wolves.
  2. Beside Headings type the three headings; Appearance, Diet & Habitat. 
  3. Beside Visual features type descriptions of the photos and diagrams found on the web page.
  4. Beside Paragraph key ideas type the important details you found after reading the information under each of your three headings; Appearance, Diet & Habitat.
  5. Beside Layout and design note information about the web page layout – how the information and illustrations are arranged on the page.
  6. Beside Final comments add anything you think is important to add.

When you are finished, you will have a plan that you could use to write an explanation about Grey Wolves.

Save

How to save a file:


  1. Have the file open and select Save As from the File menu.
  2. Name your Grey Wolves Plan file in this format: jsmith_greywolvesplan and save the file to your Documents folder.
  1. This worksheet is similar to homework, which is an opportunity to practise important concepts in the lesson. The worksheet is NOT for marks.
  2. However, your teacher may ask you to submit this worksheet to check on your progress so be sure to save it in your Documents folder.

You will use this plan again in another lesson.
