Skateboard
Visualize the following in your mind:
A young boy is skateboarding on a city sidewalk. An adult gets angry and tells him to stop. The young boy is confused because he does not know where he is supposed to skateboard.
As you visualize this scenario, think about what might happen next. What might the adult say to the boy or the boy to the adult next?

Skateboard is a different kind of poem in which you can almost visualize what is going on. Examine the way the author writes the poem. How can the poem connect to the dialogue that you have just written? What prediction can you make about the poem without reading it? Write your answers in the Reader's Notebook worksheet.
Read the poem closely.
Notice that the author uses phrases directly related to skateboarding:
- bombing the hill
- cut jump
- see how she corners

If you do a lot of skateboarding, you will likely know these terms. If you don't skateboard, these words may be unfamiliar. Can you think of other words that you use specifically for one sport, such as
hockey: blue line and
dance: tap, lift?
Write other special words used in a sport or activity in the Reader’s Notebook: Skateboard worksheet.
