Reader's Notebook
To The Pole!
This is the first of three stories about the Fenton Street Four in Literacy in Action 4B (To The Pole, Mountain Tamers, and Snow
Fun).
Remember that you will be using the predict, infer, and connect strategy in these stories. As you read each story, ask yourself the following questions: What am I predicting? What am I inferring? What connections am I making?

Click each coloured row for information about the assignment.
Use the Reading Strategy Chart to keep track of your use of your predictions, inferences, and connections as you read the three stories.
Before you start to read, think about the title, look at the pictures, and make some predictions about what will happen in this story. Write your predictions in the My Predictions for Part One section for each story on the Reading Strategy Chart.

Learning To Use The Strategy
Pause and Check

Read page 70 in Literacy in Action 4B. Pause and check your predictions. It is not necessary to change your first predictions if you didn't get them "right". It doesn't matter. What is important is thinking about what may happen
in the story and learning to use the predicting strategy.
Each time you use the strategy, you learn more about making predictions, whether you get them "right" or not. Don't be concerned if some of your predictions turn out to be different from what really happened: use them and what you have learned about the story so far to make new ones.

Make your new predictions, and write them in the My Predictions for Part Two on the Reading Strategy Chart. Then read page 71 in Literacy in Action 4B. When you are finished, go back to the Reading Strategy Chart and
complete My Inferences and "My Connections". Remember that your connections can be to other stories you have read, or to your own life.
Answer the questions about the story on the Reader's Notebook: To the Pole! worksheet.
