Unit 6

Amazing Places!

Assignment

Compound Words

Compound words are made up of two or more words.

Each of the following words has its own meaning:

  • Base – a starting point or station
  • Ball – a sphere or globe
  • House – a building intended for human habitation
  • Boat – a craft that travels on water

However, if you put these words together, they take on a different meaning:

  • Base + Ball = baseball – a game played by hitting a ball and running around bases
  • House + Boat = houseboat – a house built on a boat that people live in while floating on water

Baseball and houseboat are compound words made up of two smaller words with different meanings.
