Assignment
Compound Words
Compound words are made up of two or more words.
Each of the following words has its own meaning:
- Base – a starting point or station
- Ball – a sphere or globe
- House – a building intended for human habitation
- Boat – a craft that travels on water
However, if you put these words together, they take on a different meaning:
- Base + Ball = baseball – a game played by hitting a ball and running around bases
- House + Boat = houseboat – a house built on a boat that people live in while floating on water
Baseball and houseboat are compound words made up of two smaller words with different meanings.
